Description

This is my first time ever attempting lightning photography. I had NO idea what I was doing. I went outside and had it on manual and I just changed it to night photography. I didn't have time to read the manual real quick to figure out how to set it up cuz I didn't know how long it would last. Anyways, not bad for my first time I think. Please, feel free to let me know what I could have done differently or whatever. Cropped out the roof of a house and upped the contrast a bit just to make it pop a bit more.

Then, we walked inside and it started raining. But it was really really hard. Ran outside - it was hail. We had a time trying to get our cars under the carport and getting the animals inside as quickly as possible. The birds were freaking out and we thought one was gonna have a heart attack. All 18 birds and the dog were ok. All the other animals besides the turtle and cats were already inside. It was a very hectic crazy night.

Great first lightning shot Jen! You nailed the exposure on it and caught some great colors!

The dark cloud in the foreground of the lightning kinda frames this shot weird though. There's nothing you could have done about it so, you get a free pass here At first glance I thought it was a tree. LOL.

I think next time you should also try shooting at a lower ISO. 640 on your D60 looks like it produces quite a bit of noise. Try ISO 100 next time for a longer time and perhaps you'll catch a few more lightning bolts in your photo.

I think also I would have tried shooting wider and showing the environment that the lightning is striking to give a spatial relationship.

But hey, Monday Morning Quarterbacking is much easier than doing it the day before For your first time doing storm photography you rocked it. I can't wait to see your future shots!
